Spanish fly
Caldero (Cow Hollow)
GOODS & SERVICES • FOUND Shop
San Francisco has no shortage of specialty food shops. Add Caldero to the list. It’s a new Spanish pantry goods, cheese, and gift shop on Union Street from Juan and Victoria Lozano, the father-daughter team behind the two-year-old paella pop-up of the same name. You may also know Victoria from a stint at Hayes Valley’s B-side, with her Venezuelan pop-up Andina, which ended in March. Fans of either would be wise to get themselves to the Lozanos’ pantry.
The Cow Hollow shop features an array of tinned fish, olives, condiments, olive oil, and spices, with a special emphasis on pimentón (smoked paprika). They also plan to sell Spanish cheeses, and the shop offers housewares and gift items such as cheese board kits. A Spanish wine offering is also in the works.
If you’re throwing your own paella party — and you’re not having the Lozanos cater it — this is the place to come for tinned octopus, pimenton, bomba rice, and most importantly, specialized stock bases from Barcelona-based Aneto, including a briny seafood base for Valencian paella and the black cuttlefish-ink base for arroz negro. –Jay Barmann
