CHEZ MOVES: In Berkeley, the plywood is down at 1515 Shattuck Ave., which for 24 years was the home of neighborhood tapas bar César. That spot’s run ended in 2022 when neighbor and landlord Chez Panisse evicted the business, with Alice Waters announcing she hoped to open a “welcoming bar with delicious food” at the address. Patrons (including Moneyball author Michael Lewis) protested the closure (Lewis told me at that time that “every great book idea I have had, I had at César”), even mounting a well-attended demonstration (above) on Chez Panisse’s first post-pandemic day of service.
