Curiouser and curiouser

Inside The Cottages at Little Saint, everything is not as it appears. Open the wardrobe and find a wallpapered wet bar. Push on the mirrored armoire and discover a secret entrance connecting rooms.

No, this isn’t a page out of Alice in Wonderland — it’s a look inside the new hospitality extension from the Little Saint team next door. A quiet oasis located on a side cul-de-sac just a block off Healdsburg’s main square, it’s a private retreat adjacent to all the action. With vintage storybook charm straight from your favorite childhood fairytale, the four bespoke cottages (Gimme Shelter, Court, Spark, Deja Vu) showcase the vision of creative mastermind Ken Fulk, offering a small-scale, experiential alternative to more traditional Wine Country lodging.

Beamed ceilings, hardwood floors, and fireplaces lay the foundation for Fulk’s whimsical storytelling through thoughtfully curated antique furniture, vintage-inspired wallpaper, saturated hues, and flora-and-fauna motifs, plus hand-painted pieces and trompe l’oeil accents by San Francisco artist Rafael Arana. Look closely, and you’ll find some cheeky touches too, like vintage tin boxes in Court’s bathroom with the numbers 6 and 9.

Looking for a tie-in with the music scene at Little Saint (the restaurant’s upstairs event venue hosts weekly live shows), co-owner Laurie Ubben drew inspiration from Laurel Canyon musicians of the ’60s and ’70s, with each cottage named after an iconic song or album. Putting a fine point on things, each cottage comes with a record player and unique vinyl collection — ranging from Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon to Neil Young and The Rolling Stones — reflecting the personality and story of each room.

Rooms are stocked with made-in-Healdsburg touches, including hydrosols, shrubs, and tea blends from Land + Local, as well as handmade soaps, lotions, and bath salts from Herb Nerd, with many ingredients sourced from Little Saint Farm. You’ll find a canvas tote with towels for the heated pool, pebbled walking paths, and communal seating areas. Suites have private front porches with hand-painted fences where you can sit with a drink and listen to nature (cue the Southern charm).

Everything about the experience is designed to emphasize privacy and personalization, like housemade popcorn and fresh flowers that can be delivered to your room. The aforementioned Court cottage can connect with Spark through a secret armoire doorway, turning the space into a three-bedroom hideaway for families or larger groups. Little Saint serves as the intimate property’s onsite restaurant, and the cottages’ concierge service offers a Field Guide to help choose adventures during your stay (dinner and a show at Little Saint, wine tastings, etc.). Book direct through their website, and you’ll get some play money in the form of a gift card to Little Saint.

Not surprisingly, The Cottages at Little Saint are in high demand, so plan appropriately. –Allison McCarthy
