Hush hush
Founded in 1857 when Ohio squatter Harmon Heald agreed to pony up for part of the Rancho Sotoyome land grant, Healdsburg has evolved into a home away from home for many Bay Area residents. The tiny city (pop. 11,340 as of 2020) along the Russian River offers a respite from city noise with its strict restrictions on sound levels throughout the area. In the last year, 157 residences have changed hands at a median price of $1.227M, Compass reports. Sound (quietly) good? Then perhaps one of these listings will intrigue:

GETAWAYS • Palm Springs
Amped up
In the time capsule that is Palm Springs — with its midcentury architecture, ’80s music, and boutiques selling mixed print kaftans — the new Thompson hotel is strikingly, refreshingly modern.
This installment in Hyatt’s younger, sexier brand plays by all the latest design rules. There are huge paintings against an earthy color palette, a vibrant lounge area flowing into a Mediterranean restaurant, and a patio overlooking a perfectly turquoise pool. Only the dramatic backdrop of sun-kissed mountains and wind-tickled palm trees says Palm Springs. Poolside, spicy fish taco in hand, two stories above street level, looking at the old-school shops and people watching, I felt like I was in on a slick little secret.
The dining room of the hotel’s flagship restaurant, Lola Rose Grand Mezze, is dimly lit and packed with a mix of locals and guests. In the lounge, guests on laptops looked busy with what I imagined were fabulous entrepreneurial endeavors. By the pool, other unburdened guests laid down their towels and took out reading materials. Relaxing and stimulating go hand in hand at the Thompson. The perfect getaway demands a little bit of both. –Flora Tsapovsky
