It’s Friday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
The answer depends entirely on which week it is. I might be at my desk at home answering emails, recording an Midnight Mass Podcast interview, in a hotel room on the road touring with a Peaches show, or at my Terror Vault production office inside the old San Francisco Mint building preparing for an upcoming production. The rhythm changes week to week.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I’m about to jump online for an interview with my friend and idol Mink Stole to promote our upcoming Idol Worship tour across North America, the UK, Ireland, and Amsterdam. We’ll be wrapping the run with one final show in San Francisco that we’ll announce soon.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
I’m heading to Las Vegas this weekend for a gig, so I don’t have firm restaurant plans there, but I already know what I’ll crave when I get home: a giant bowl of pozole at San Jalisco on South Van Ness. It’s hearty, deeply flavorful, and pure San Francisco comfort food. For brunch, I’m obsessed with the traditional Turkish breakfast at Healthyish Republic a few blocks away.
How about a little leisure or culture?
I’m excited about several upcoming film and music events. On March 17 at the Castro Theatre, I’ll present John Waters with the Frameline Award before he gives live commentary during a screening of Serial Mom. I still have to write my speech!
Speaking of culture, on April 2, I return to the Castro to present Showgirls with special guest Gina Gershon and free lap dances with every large popcorn. Concerts I’m looking forward to include Perfume Genius at the Castro, Anna von Hausswolff at Brick and Mortar, the Human League at the Warfield, and this summer’s Mosswood Meltdown.
Any weekend getaways?
A trip I’d love to repeat soon is a return to Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California for its incredible hiking and dramatic landscapes.
What was your last great vacation?
My husband and I spent the holidays in Mexico City with my brother and his husband. We visited remarkable museums, including a Pierre et Gilles exhibition, ate extraordinary food, and took a boat trip to Xochimilco and the Island of the Dolls, which was a highlight.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I often send people to my friend Paulina’s West Coast Craft show, which takes place periodically at Fort Mason Center.
Where are you donating your time or money?
One nonprofit I strongly support is the LGBT Asylum Project in San Francisco, which provides legal representation for LGBT asylum seekers fleeing persecution related to sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status.

French film
The Skinny: Chemist-turned-tennis instructor Brando Jessie had dreamed of opening his own, French-style neighborhood wine bar for years, and the opportunity presented itself when a retail tenant in the North Beach building he owns decided to leave in 2021. It took until late last year to get Chez Brando fully operational, and it’s already become an idiosyncratic locals’ hang.
